Objective: to determine the correlation between labour satisfaction and physician wear out.

Material and methods: there was a cross sectional study with all the family doctors from four Units of Family Medicine from Cancun (n = 102), with four or more years of medical practice.

The questionnaire Red Font was used for labour satisfaction and Maslach Burnout Inventory for professional wear out, as well as the coefficient of correlation of Kendall.

Results: the predominant level of labour satisfaction was the medium (50.5 %). the low level of wear out prevailed (50.5 %). Medical doctors with medium or high satisfaction had low to medium wear out, and those who were reported with low satisfaction had moderate and high wear out. In the analysis bivariate between labour satisfaction and professional wear out the association was statistically significant, although there was not correlation (Kendall = –0.281).

Conclusions: in contrast with other studies where they found an inversely proportional relationship,in this study any correlation was found. The ideal situation could be that all medical doctors develop high satisfaction and low professional wear of; however this didn’t happen through this study. It is very important to

study all the factors that have influence to elevate the professional wear of and dissatisfaction in our medical doctors to develop programs that allow to cope these problems.

Daniel Briones Mella

Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina.

The article refers to a quantitative research intended to verify the presence of the burnout syndrome and its relationship with strategies for coping with stress, performed on 115 “Carabineros”, both male and female, belonging to determined specialized units of “Carabineros de Chile”, to whom the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Scale (C.O.P.E.) were applied. It was proved that a high percentage (48,7%) of personnel working in said police units which deal with human problems which are complex and have an impact (mistreatment and abuse of minors, deaths resulting from car accidents and major offenses), show high indicators of the syndrome . It was also found that married people showed a significantly augmented “Decrease of personal achievement” strategy compared with single women and that women used significantly more the “Religion” coping technique than men, as Institutional Appointed Personnel uses it more frequently compared with Government Appointed Personnel. Lastly, it was confirmed that strategies such as “Focusing on emotions”, “Mental disconnection” and “Search or social emotional support” predict significantly the “Emotional exhaustion” of the burnout syndrome, as “Denial”, “Mental disconnection” and “Behavioral Disconnection” predict the “Depersonalization” dimension.

Burnout syndrome is increasingly observed among professionals, mainly physicians who work with people and are under the influence of external and internal special factors; external factors like those pertaining to institutions in which he works, and internal ligated to his personality. In this paper signs and symptoms are recorded and medical literature referring to the subject is analyzed. More observations are needed to understand the problem, add empirical evidences and establish routes to prevent and treat risk groups.

Abstract

Burnout syndrome and cardiovascular somatic symptoms in nurses from a health facility in the Distrito Federal

Introduction: Burnout syndrome is relatively often present in personnel who work in health facilities as an affective psycho- social response of showing oneself emotionally exhausted; it is manifested through negative attitudes and feelings toward workers. Cardiovascular diseases are de most significant among the produced physical alterations.

Objectives: 1) To identify the level of Burnout Syndrome within a group of nurses in a health facility in the Distrito Federal; 2) To determine the relation between Burnout Syndrome, cardiovascular somatic symptoms, and blood pressure measurements. Methodology: In 109 nurses Bournout score was assessed through Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBIG-S) Core ver- sion with two subscales: emotional tiredness(0.85) and deperso- nalization (0.78); a questionnaire of cardiovascular symptoms and a protocol of estimated points of blood pressure at work. Results: 67% of nurses were predominant with medium Burnout score; low and high levels were represented with 19% and 14% respectively. It was obtained a significant correlation (r=348 p≤=0.01) between the cardiovascular symptoms and Bournout syndrome, as well as with the component of emotional tiredness (r=374 p≤=0.01). The relation between blood pressure and Burnout Syndrome it did not show significance.

Conclusions: The significant relation between cardiovascular symptoms and Burnout syndrome showed subjectively a first manifestation of cardiovascular disea- se which can be physically exposed latter. In the case of emotional tired- ness and cardiovascular symptoms, a hypothesis is founded: as long as phy- sical and emotional tiredness are per- ceived in and by working, there is an increment in presence of cardiovas- cular disease.

In the present theoretical study the main discoveries and researches in teachers´ stress and burnout are reviewed. In first place, studies focused on isolating the different causes of sociodemografic, organizational and personality type are analysed.

Immediately after, the theoretical models that try to explain this phenomenon are presented as well as other related variables and the personal, familiar and organizational consequences associated to them. Finally, the main evaluation instruments and the latest tendencies in prevention and intervention are presented. After having revised in
detail the existing scientific literature on this topic, some limitations are detected in the used methodology with teachers as well as the inadequacy of the methodological approaches assigned to them. The data point out bigger indexes of absenteeism and leaves of absence, this situation implies a high cost for the Educational Administration.
Thus it is that, we propose a reflection on these aspects as well as in the convenience of adopting experimental designs and systems of early detection and prevention.
