<p>We are seeking a highly motivated Principal or Senior Research Scientist with interests in behavioral approaches to system safety to join the Center for Behavioral Sciences. The mission of the Center is to investigate behavioral, cognitive, and organizational factors surrounding workplace injuries and highway collisions. The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety is committed to high quality science including the dissemination of its research results in the open, peer-reviewed scientific press.</p>
<p><span id="more-108"></span>Responsibilities:</p>
<p>• Principal Investigator on challenging Institute research projects, and Co-PI or investigator on other projects. Maintains extensive external network within area of specialization.</p>
<p>The researcher filling this position will be expected to conduct original research from the perspective of safety as a process &#8212; or set of processes&#8211; of adaptation to complexity; such processes being driven by changing demands and/or unexpected events. He/she should have the willingness and capability to examine topics such as risk perception, fatigue, team performance, human error, organizational safety climate, and safety systems from a conceptual framework which embodies some combination of the following: human systems integration, macroergonomics, cognitive systems engineering, sociotechnical systems analysis.</p>
<p>• Identifies new strategies and emerging opportunities in safety research consistent with the mission of LMRIS. Develops novel theories, applications, methodologies and principles within scientific specialization to solve contemporary business relevant workplace safety issues. Proposes and pursues new directions and develops new paradigms</p>
<p>• Mentors other researchers and post-docs</p>
<p>• Consistently creates a climate conducive to generating ideas through staff presentations and seminars.</p>
<p>• Conceives, plans, conducts, analyses and reports on experimental and/or field studies, including preparing proposals for directors, technical review committees, internal review boards, reporting on progress, and may work with practice-oriented colleagues within</p>
<p>Liberty Mutual Group to interpret and implement research findings;</p>
<p>• Actively contributes to external committees, organizes internal and external conferences, workshops and meetings. Leads international groups</p>
<p>• Conceives high-impact research program, and/or develops/coordinates Institute research programs with the goal of publication in peer reviewed periodicals and presentations at scientific conferences.</p>
<p>• This position&#8217;s work will compliment the work of collaborating colleagues in the Center for Behavioral Sciences which conducts original laboratory and field studies to increase understanding of the behavioral, cognitive, and organizational factors surrounding workplace injuries and highway collisions, and informs the Institute&#8217;s other multidisciplinary research programs.</p>

<p>Qualifications:</p>
<p>• Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) and at least 8 years experience in human factors/ergonomics or related area with experience/training in research in behavioral science focused on one or more of the following:</p>
<p>macroergonomics/cognitive systems</p>
<p>engineering/ /human system integration/socio-technical systems analysis with evidence</p>
<p>of international standing (supported by endorsement of international experts, invitations</p>
<p>to keynote, awards, impact factor);</p>
<p>• Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications;</p>
<p>• National or international reputation within their field as evidenced by memberships in study sections, advisory groups, editorial boards, prestigious scientific or professional societies, awards, prizes, and other notable academic achievements;</p>
<p>• A strong record of investigator-initiated research, and/or recognition for superior accomplishments in their specialty;</p>
<p>• Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills are required to facilitate the dissemination of research</p>
<p>• Strong presentation skills.</p>
<p>• The capability and orientation to collaborate with other research scientists on diverse safety-related problems outside of as well as within her/his primary area of research interest. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship program is a new program announced by the Government of Canada to foster “top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally, to develop their leadership potential and to position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow”.  The fellowships are expected to be highly competitive and require joint application from the individual and host institution (see attached program description).  Applicants must have completed all doctoral level requirements between Nov 3, 2007 and  Dec 31, 2010. The two year awards ($70,000 CAD per anum) are to be taken up between April and October 2011.  Please note that the awards are open to non-Canadian citizens and that applicants will be selected on the basis of:</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Research excellence and leadership in the research domain – demonstrated capacity for research excellence based on track-record to date as defined by quality of the applicant’s research contribution, and demonstrated capacity for leadership in the research domain defined by the sphere of influence achieved to date by the applicant.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Quality of the applicant’s proposed research program – examined in terms of the potential of the proposed research program, executed in the proposed institutional environment, to position the applicant for significant impact through a research-intensive career (potential for significant impact).</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">As Director of the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety I am  interested in working with an eligible applicant to develop a successful application focused in the area of occupational health psychology.  The CN Centre is a funded centre of research excellence at Saint Mary’ University (www.smu.ca), Halifax Nova Scotia.  There are 10 full-time faculty (drawn primarily from the departments of Psychology and Management) associated with the centre actively working in areas related to Occupational Health Psychology including topics such as safety culture, safety motivation, safety leadership, work-family conflict, organizational justice, workplace incivility, aggression and violence, occupational stress, organizational conflict and a wide variety of other topics. The Centre is home to three Canada Research Chairs (Arla Day, Catherine Loughlin, Kevin Kelloway)  Approximately 20-25 students from Saint Mary’s graduate programs in Management (PhD) and I/O Psychology (M.Sc. and PhD) are also associated with the centre.</p>
