I have had the good luck to work with people who felt passionately aboutintrinsic motivation. Betty Vetthouse, now at the University of Michigan-Flint, first got me thinking about empowerment as a research topic when she was PhD student at the University of Pittsburgh. Walt Tymon, now at Villanova University, became a long-term research instrument now titled the work Engagement Profile, which provides much of the research evidence cited in this book. Erik Jansen, my coleague at Naval Postgraduate School, helped me sort through the conceptual underbrush around this topic. It was also Erik who first suggested I write this book. Iam deeply indebted to each of them for sharing ideas, enthusiasm, and support.
